Kwon’s Story

Our lovely student Kwon from Korea undertook 25 weeks General English tuition as part of her Academic Year programme and successfully worked her way up two English language levels from Pre-Intermediate (CEF A2) to  Upper-Intermediate (CEF B2)!

Kwon studied with us for a 6 month study period from March until August and she is now enjoying a 6 month holiday period and has found a job in a city center cafe where she is using her English everyday.

Here are Kwon’s thoughts on her language stay in Cork:

Kwon

Hello, my name is Kwon. I am Korean and I studied Hospitality at my university before I came to Ireland. I took a year off and came here in order to improve my English, especially my speaking skills, because I would like to work in Tourism so learning foreign languages is essential for me.

I had planned studying abroad for a long time. First, I chose the country and city for studying. I would like to go in Europe because I wanted to travel loads of countries while I stay abroad. But there are a lot of Koreans in England already. So I tried to find a country which has very few Korean. At that time, I watched the films ‘ps. I love you’ and ‘Leap year’ which is set in Ireland. And I was fascinated by Ireland. Since then, I searched lots of information about Ireland and decided to come to Cork.

I came here through a Language Agency called ABC. As far as I know, ABC is the only Korean agent that has an office in Cork and that is the number one reason why I chose to book with Kim from ABC. Before and after I arrived here, she was so kind as to help me. When I was worried about choosing school, I told her I would like to go school which is kind of family. She recommended me Cork English Academy. So I registered at CEA for 25 weeks and I’ve been very satisfied with the result!

I started from an A2 level and got a B2 certification after 6 months. I think my English has improved a lot. At the beginning of school, I was very nervous whenever I spoke English. But now I’m not nervous as much as I was. And I can understand more than before. And for me the most difficult one was pronunciations. So I went to the free pronunciation class every Tuesday. It was really helpful. Also I watched loads of American/English TV shows and movies. And I recorded new vocabularies and useful expressions. I did of course homework and review as much as I could.

To be honest, I have only positive comments to say about my school. All staffs and teachers were really, really great. I had periodic meeting with teachers and they always took good care of me. The facilities are also fine with big and clean class rooms, student room and bathrooms. The only bad thing I experienced was sometimes Wifi didn’t work well.

When I had a problem in my house, they helped me to find temporary accommodation with their accommodation provider. I lived there for 2 weeks. I thought the location and housemates were good.

About living Cork, I have never regretted coming here. While I have been living here for 6 months, at the start sometimes I was bored and a little bit lonely but I made a lot of good friends, learned something new and enjoyed living in a new place as well. As far as I am concerned, the people are really kind and Cork city gives a friendly and cozy feeling. Of course, as you know, the weather is strange. (But at the moment, we have a nice “summer”:>)

Usually I had a farewell party every weekend in the pub. The atmosphere is a bit different to pubs in Korea. I spent a lot of nice nights in pub with a pint. Also I used to travel around Ireland on weekends and bank holidays. I visited Kinsale, Cobh, Dublin, Dingle and so on. In my opinion, the best place I’ve visited in Ireland was Dingle. I hired a car with my friends and drove along the shore. It was awesome! You can get there by tourist bus as well, but I strongly recommend driving to get there.

Now I finished my long race in school and I am working in Gloria Jean’s coffee. Sometimes I face a difficult problem when I take the order I am getting better. I think it is another opportunity to improve my English.

I would like to recommend my friends to come here and study English, for me, it’s the best place to study English.

”I am Japanese but as I have lived quite a long time(11 years) in Sevilla,Spain. I feel myself more Spanish than Japanese. And I have also lived in Finland as well.I feel a bit Finnish too. I would like to apply for a Master degree(I have BA in Political Science)of universities of Finland, and I need to get a good point in IELTS exam to be accepted. The last time I did that exam, I got 6.5,not bad,but still I felt it was not enough to seek for the education of MA level.

The education of English I received in Japan was based mostly on grammar…not at all on communication !! So we Japanese(at least our generation-I am a mature student) never can be fluent speakers if you don’t go to countries where English is spoken.

My dream is to be a universal person taking the best part of each country to my identity and to have at least one friend in every country in the world!!! As the variety of nationalities of students here in Cork is awesome I am having a really good time(I have met for example guys from Hungary,Czech Republic and Bosnia etc)!!!

I had never visited Ireland before,it is quite strange for someone like me,having lived so many years in Spain, because for Spanish people Ireland is very popular destination to study English. I wanted to live in a northern country like Finland, which is my favorite place,so to chose Ireland was quite natural for me.

Now the choice of the city…I had another option in Dublin, but I would rather a city which is not too big nor too small…And seeing some pictures of Cork it seemed to me that it has a lot of similarities with Turku(the 3rd city in Finland)where I have lived for one month and that caught my attention.

Now I can say without any doubt that my choice was definitely correct!!! Here in Cork everything is so nice : scenery, culture, food, facilities…It is quite surprising that in a city with such a small population(190,000) that there are a lot of things to do and you can never be bored!!!

But the thing I love the most about this city is people!!! They are so kind, talkative, funny and informal(in a good sense)!!! It is quite easy for me to make local friends!!! Actually I have already a lot of Irish friends to go out with although I have been here for only one month!!!

I have never seen a language school so professional and with great deal of goodwill like Cork English Academy!!! All and every teacher is very enthusiastic and yes I feel I am LEARNING almost for the first time in many years!!! Besides it seems fantastic there are free conversation and pronunciation classes in the afternoon, and I love the Wednesday culture class swapping teachers!!!

In a nutshell,CEA is a great place to learn English and I really recommend this fantastic academy to all of the students who are thinking about coming to Ireland!!! ”

Javier’s Story

We are delighted to have Javier the Bagpipe player studying with us at Cork English Academy.

We thought the Bagpipes were only played in Ireland where they are known as the Uileann pipes and in Scotland  but we have now learned that they have been played for centuries throughout large parts of Europe, the Caucasus, around the Persian Gulf and in Northern Africa.

”I’m, a student of Cork English Academy and I want to recommend you this school because you’re going to learn in different ways : in class, conversations, games, watching movies, tours of the city.

In Cork you can find almost everything you need for a great time: Irish pubs with traditional music sessions, theatres, cinemas, bowling alleys.

You can also visit beaches, mountains , castles and other typical Irish landscapes.

But the most important of all is the human quality of the Cork English Academy Staff…the teachers and secretaries. They help with any problem”.

Brigitte’s Story

I’m studying English for my future job because I want to be a flight attendant. I’ve chosen Cork because I have never been to Ireland and for me Dublin has too many tourists.

I always travel with easylanguages.com if I want to learn a language in a foreign country. They are always in contact with you for any case and they have always found nice host families for me. In each language holiday I have always stayed with a host family. For me it is the best way to learn a language.

On St. Patrick’s Day I was green as you can see from my pictures. I watched the  parade with other students from the school and we went to many pubs to enjoy St. Patrick’s Day.
